Superman was born on the fictional planet Krypton and was named Kal-El. As a baby, his parents sent him to Earth in a small spaceship moments before Krypton was destroyed in a natural cataclysm. His ship landed in the American countryside, near the fictional town of Smallville. The film’s greatest strength is that it compellingly dramatizes its theme, the moral virtue of pride, or what Ayn Rand calls “moral ambitiousness.” Superman is a Man of Steel not only because he is nearly indestructible, but because he is a man of great strength of character.
